The Roots Program - Spring 2003
Computer Mapping Program for Environmental Protection

Description of Program: Using Computer mapping software to develop maps that show how lands were used for community 'in the past' and 'now', and how it relates to us. Results will be presented to different groups in the community and displayed in the web site.

Purpose:
1. To advocate the importance ofenvironmental protection.
2. To arouse the awareness of various communities in the impact of urban development on environment.
3. Participants will -
    a. Serve the community.
    b. Learn Environmental Protection.
    c. Fulfill Volunteer Credits.
    d. Get a chance to use the Largest Geographic Information System (GIS) in New England.
    e. Learn about Skyphotos of MA.
    f. Get experience on computer mapping skill.

Date: 04/04/03 - 05/23/03 8 sessions

Time: Every Friday (4pm - 6:30pm)

Location:
- UMass Boston (Earth and Geographic Sciences laboratory).
- Episcopal Boston Chinese Ministry. 138 Tremont Street, Boston.

Requirement of students:
1. High School Students (Grade 9 - 12 ).
2. Basic computer operation knowledge.
