Stories of Community Change
MYTOWN (Multicultural Youth Tour of What's Now)

Last week, our "Boston Underground" gave us an idea of all the thing we usually don't see because they happen out of sight, far below out feet. Steve Kluskens was able to help become aware of all the huge structures and complex systems that our lives in the city depend upon, usually without us even knowing.

This week, MYTOWN is going to give us a tour of the South End that highlights another perspective on Boston history that we often don't get. This tour is unique because it's given by high school students who have researched this neighborhood and because it focuses on how ethnic, immigrant, and working class people have contributed to the community's development. This will give us another view of how urban communities struggle to decide how their neighborhoods should preserve good places and change the bad ones.

Neighborhood Exercise

Here's the homework for this week (for picture-taking ideas, see last week's description):

1. Finish taking one 24 exposure roll of film and develop it as single prints.

2. Pick four of your favorite photos and write a short caption for each (this should be a short description that tells what it's about, where it is, and what you think is interesting about it).

3. Bring your photos and the captions with you on Thursday.

4. During the week, I'll scan in your photos and make a little "neighborhood photo gallery" for the web site so you can see each others pictures.
