What Can a Parish Do?

Seven Things Every Church Can Do For the Environment

The Environmental Justice Covenant Congregation Program
Governing bodies of congregations are asked to make a promise that their congregation will engage or continue to engage in environmental justice. http://www.webofcreation.org/ncc/WGCONG.HTM

Environmental Checklist for Churches:

Maintenance

1) Refrigerator coils cleaned in last six months.
2) Filters on heating/cooling system replaced at least annually.
3) Water leaks identified and repaired promptly.
4) Sprinkler system turned off during rainy periods.

Energy

1) Electricity provided by a renewable (green) energy provider.
2) Incandescent lamps replaced by compact fluorescent lamps where feasible.
3) Programmable thermostats installed and set to reduce to heating and cooling during unoccupied periods.
4) Computers and monitors configured to energy saving mode.
5) Lights kept off in unoccupied areas.
6) Exit signs refitted with LED lamps.
7) Procedure in place to assure only EnergyStar office equipment and appliances are part of all new equipment purchases.
8) Halogen torchiers replace by fluorescent torchiers.

Recycling

1) Reuseable plates and cups used where feasible.
2) Appropriate recycling bins available in fellowship and office areas.
3) Office paper is made with a minimum 30 percent post consumer fiber.
4) Hand towels are minimum 25 percent post-consumer fiber.
5) Bathroom tissue is minimum 25 percent post-consumer fiber.
6) Procedure in place for recycling inkjet and laserjet toner cartridges.
7) Lawn clippings either composted on-site or managed as green waste.

Hazardous and Toxic Materials
1) Procedure in place to maximize use of low-VOC paints.
2) Procedure in place to promptly and properly dispose of hazardous materials such as waste paints, used fluorescent lamps, etc.
3) Procedures in place to limit use of pesticides to qualified applicators.

Nurture, Outreach, and Witness
1) Earth Day Worship Service on Church Calendar
2) Youth group and other church groups encouraged participating in local cleanup days and other environmental events.
